HALF TERM WORK - Planning costume ideas

Planning Costume Ideas

Characters from films with memorable costumes/makeup:

I have an idea of the girl obviously being a girly girl who wears pink and wears dresses and skirts with hair done nicely and makeup.  The room would be pink which is covered in jewellery and makeup.  The boy would be dressed smartly in a shirt and trousers for the date but his room is messy with clothes everywhere and his console controllers and games on the floor.

The characters names would be a really common name.  Their role in the title sequence is to be getting ready for a date which also gives a hint of the genre and the characters personalities by the way they dress and their room.

HALF TERM WORK - Finding and planning locations and settings

Finding and Planning Locations and Settings

The reason using a house in Romford is a good idea is because our target audience is to people aged 16-20 outside of Central London.  Also, using a house fits in with our title sequence idea.

Romford is about 16 miles away from Central London.

PLANNING- Individual ideas for title sequence

Genre:
The genre that we have decided to do in our own title sequence is going to be Romcom. The reason why we have decided to do this is because we feel that it is a realistic goal for us to do well in this film and it is likely to appeal the most to our target audience which is those who are between 16-20. Also not many people have tried to do romcom in the past so we thought we will be the first to do it and we are sure it will go well. We also enjoy watching romcom films that will benefit us a lot because we can add bits that we like to make the work the best as possible.
movie animated GIF

Storyline:
The Storyline of own title sequence will be two people( one boy, one girl) getting ready for their first date. The girl is really lively and is up really early getting ready and brushing her hair while the boy is lazy and is still sleeping. He forgets about the date till very late and is in a rush to get changed. He drops everything on the floor and makes a mess of everything. they finally end up meeting each other and it stops there.

Character types:
As mentioned above, the girl is very lively and is very neat and tidy. she is well organised and takes care of her things. She has a very girlie bedroom with practically the whole room covered in pink and filled with nail varnishes, make up etc. The boy on the other hand is very lazy and forgets everything. He is very messy and doesn't take much care of his belongings. He ends up being late to the date and that didn't please the girl at all.

PLANNING - Individual ideas for title sequence

INDIVIDUAL IDEA

                                     heath ledger animated GIF

Genre- our group chose romance as the genre. This is because we wanted to generate and create something that hasn't been done before in the previous years. The genre romance is seen as a hard genre to do but creating something that hasn't been seen before with the  ideas are not packed together and are more simplistic to not confuse the audience would be a much better approach from our group.

film animated GIF

Storyline- Most romance movies start off with one actor meeting another. We wanted to create a similar effect to make sure that the genre is given away immediately. The title sequence starts off with both actors getting ready. I thought it would be much better if we show both girl and boy separately and then both together in a slip screen while getting ready. In the sequence we will show the difference between the girls and the boys feelings towards the date at the end through key shots such as close ups for facial expressions and the boy being lazy and clumsy towards getting ready.

movie animated GIF

Character types- To add comedy we wanted to make a contrast between characters therefore we created the girl being a happy bubbly typical girly girl seen in movies and the by being bulky and clumsy, the total opposite than the girl.

PLANNING - Individual idea

Individual ideas

Genre:

The genre our group decided on was rom-com. This was because we had an achievable goal/idea which is realistic in terms of it can be done quite easily. It is not usually done by students so we thought we could give it a try at being different. Also I enjoy romantic comedies so I knew it would be a genre a I was knowledgable about (as well as have fun with).

Storyline:

The storyline of our opening is quite simple, it is just a teen girl and boy getting ready for a date. They will be very stereotypical for example the girl will have a pink room, pink accessories etc. The boy will be lazy etc. The girl will wake up early to get ready, happy and smiling. On the other hand the boy will wake up late and having to rush getting ready which results in complications with his breakfast and putting on his clothes. After the ultimate struggle of getting ready, the two meet which is the end of our opening.

Character types:

The girl is a stereotypically a girly girl - meaning she likes pink, wears make up, cares too much about her clothes etc. She will be a college student (same age as the boy) who goes to the same college as the boy. She is quite glamorous with her style. Her room is seen to be girly and clean

The boy is lazy and dopey. This is seen as he has a messy room and junk food on his floor etc. He is not used to going on dates and this is seen while he rushes to get ready.

Social groups:

PLANNING - Head on activity and mood board

Head on Activity and Mood Board

Influenced by - Legally Blonde and 10 Things I Hate About You:

This is because both movie genres are romance with added comedy. These type of movies are exactly what we are trying to make as our title sequence as the social group is teenagers.

PLANNING - Individual ideas/outline for a title sequence

Individual Idea

Genre:
- The genre our group came up with was a romantic comedy.  We thought this was a good idea because not many people in AS Media has approached this idea and it is an interesting genre as you have a lot to do with it.

Storyline:
- The storyline is of a teenage boy and girl who are getting ready for a date.  The girl with have the typical girly room e.g. pink walls and posters and the boys room will be messy.  The boy will still be sleeping while the girl is getting ready and he ends up rushing to get ready in time to meet the girl.  At the end of the opening, it will be of the girl and boy finally meeting up.

Character Types:
- The girl will be a typical girly girl who wears makeup, wears pink and girly clothes.  The boy will be lazy and messy and this shows his personality in the opening sequence when he is rushing to get ready for the date as he overslept.  The boy and girl will both be college students who go to the same college.

PLANNING - Initial group ideas

Initial group ideas

Our group wanted to be unique therefore we decided to do a romantic comedy opening. This is because it is not usually done by AS students as they might find it a little difficult. However we are open to the challenge and are ready with amazing ideas contributed by all team members.

The first idea generated was to have a boy and girl getting ready for date, showing a boys perspective and a girls perspective. This was going to have a romantic theme only. It would consist of putting on clothes, brushing teeth, in the shower, breakfast, sprays, make up etc. accompanied by some upbeat, happy music (inspired by Legally Blonde).

We then decided that we could add a comedy effect to our opening. This could be done by using stereotypical elements such as the boy being a lazy slob and the girl being obsessive and extremely girly. This could be done by the boy having a messy room, junk food all around him and waking up late. The girl would then have a lot of pink items etc. The actors were chosen by flipping a coin which ended with Adnan and Gunes.

RESEARCH - Evaluation of remake

Evaluation of remake

Adnan Ahmed:

I think our attempt of a remake of the opening of the film 'Collateral' was not very successful however it was a good first attempt. This is because the shots were somewhat replicated and they did not run as smoothly as they do in the actual film. For example when shooting me walking it was meant to be through a crowd, which was not doable as we were not allowed to leave college grounds. The shot we got in the end was just of me walking without a crowd, which was not a good replicate of the film.

A thing that did work well is that I tried my best to create the correct mis-en-scene for the shots so I wore a costume (a grey suit with sunglasses). This worked well as you could tell that effort was put in to make me appear as 'Tom Cruise' in the opening of 'Collateral'. Without the suit it would look even more amateurish meaning it would not be quite a poor attempt at a remake.

Faiz Mohammed:

I think that our remake of the film 'Collateral' was not very successful but it wasn't too bad considering that it was our first attempt. We had a few problems at first trying to set up the camera itself and adjust to the settings. Another problem we faced was the lack of crowd and people that we expected to have in the background. In the film, there is a lot of people who are walking and it looks busy but as we were doing our one during lesson and wasn't aloud to leave the school grounds, it was difficult to get a big crowd. Once we started filming, We didn't get the right flow of shots which were shown in the film. We had to retake a lot of shots and this delayed the process of making our film better.

One thing that did go well was that we edited the clips so that it goes in sequence and we added title sequence and lots of other effects to make our film appealing.

Gunes Mahgur:

From my perspective, i think the remake of the opening of the film 'Collateral' it was obvious that it was our first attempt. This is mainly because of the setting. It was placed on school grounds therefore we couldn't find the perfect setting that we wanted to. As it was during lesson time within school there wasn't much of a crowd. This affected many shots throughout the remake and meant that we had to film certain shots and scenes again. Another point is that we didn't use the rule of third therefore the shots within the remake didn't look the same as the actual film.

One thing that we successfully achieved was the editing. With the actual film opening it started off with the actor walking in slow motion. We accomplished this in the editing as we added slow motions to the scenes that were meant to be.

Sureyya Vudali:

I think our remake to 'Collateral' was a little disappointing, but it was a good first attempt.  We tried to do the shots as they appeared in the film, but it didn't work because we didn't stick to the rule of thirds.  The main thing that didn't work was not having a crowd like it did in the movie, this wasn't possible for us as we were not allowed to leave college grounds.

The one thing that did work well was the editing because when all the scenes were out together, it all looked really good especially with the animations and credits which shows the genre of the film.

RESEARCH- conventions of Romance film openings

Summary of Romance conventions

rachel mcadams animated GIF

The micro conventions of romance:

Camera works:
Mostly medium shot or close ups to show characters facial expressions and feelings. Close ups usually used in dialogue ( match cuts) with clear focus on characters face. Many close ups in romance because of the kissing scenes and the bond between the actors are shown clearly. The shot above mostly shows medium shots because of the setting - where the actors are. Which relates to the shots been used in the film.

Editing:
The titles interrogated with the title sequence could hint the genre of the movie. This could simply be the titles being the colour red or pink (bright, sexy colours).

Mise-en-scene:
The setting of the movie depends on the storyline of the movie as the setting will match what the movie is about. Most romance movies starts off with one actor then meeting another and explaining how they met and the adventures in between.

Sounds:The music is usually exciting, happy or slow to create an affect for the audience of what genre the movie is.  The song to either be slow and romantic, deliberately indicating that there will be romance or up beat song which creates more of an fun environment.

RESEARCH- Analysing 3 title sequences (macro, micro, etc)

Analysing 3 Romance Films.

Legally Blonde

Micro Elements:
During the opening scene, there are a lot of close up and mid shots of the main objects such as her hairbrush and perfume etc and of peoples faces.  The camera is following a letter with the name 'Elle' on it which informs us about the main characters name. The shots last quite long and the title credits are pink and flashy which gives an indication of what genre the movie is - romance and a chick flick.  The credits are in front of moving images from the movie.  The characters shown in the movie have summer clothes on which suggest that it may be the holidays or nearing the end of the school term. Its set on a school campus as there are loads of teenagers, cheerleaders.  The music in the background is quite bubbly and lively which gets the audience interested in the film.

Macro Elements:

The key plot that is introduced in the title sequence is that the girl is getting ready, she's a typical barbie girl while a letter is being passed around with her name on it.  The movie starts from when she's at the school campus in a house full of girls.  The main character is introduced by having Elle Woods at the start of the title sequence which shows her in her bedroom getting ready - shows her personality by her clothes and how she acts.  The social group/s that are presented is bunch of teenage girls. Also there are boys in this title sequence who are looking at her throughout the scene and this indicates to us that this may be a romantic film and it gives us an insight of what to expect.
film animated GIF

Romeo and Juliet

Micro Elements:
In the title sequence of Romeo and Juliet there is a lot of close up shots of the two people in love and it shows the affection that they have for each other. There is also a lot of mid shots to show the background and the setting and this gives us an indication of their wealth and status depending on what environment they live in. The film credits appear along the moving images and it shows us a clip of all the main characters in the film along with their names. The music starts of slow then gets livelier as the title sequence goes on.

Macro Elements:
The storyline of the film is that two people from two very divided places fall in love and the only thing that is stopping them is the decision and ego of there parents. They try to secretly meet each other but there parents don't approve. The two people that fall in love are very young about in there late teens. There friends are also in the similar age group and they help them out if they need it. There parents are quite old but very posh and rich and they two sets of families are like rivals. They main characters are Romeo and Juliet and they feature most throughout the scene as expected.love animated GIF

500 days of summer

Micro Elements:
In the film '500 days of Summer' there is a lot of Close up shots of  their eyes. There is also a lot of mid and long shots of them playing and it is framed as if one half is one character and the other half is another character. The song that is played in the opening title sequence is quite upbeat and has a happy melody. Because of the editing, the story of this is played out as a old footage so it doesn't have the brightest of colourful but you can still tell that this is a romantic film.

Macro Elements:
The plot in this title sequence is that it has a flashback of the two main characters when they were children and it tells their story of how they grew up. They are lively and energetic which you would expect as a child and as the the name of the film is called 500 days of summer, I think it is trying to refer to the fact that how much fun they had when they were little and there still with each other to this day.

RESEARCH - Conventions of a film opening (romance)

Conventions

When Harry met Sally

500 Days of Summer

Legally Blonde

Genre:

The genre signifiers are the type of music. The music in each of the openings were generally quite happy and upbeat which made me (the audience) feel happier inside. Most had little if not no dialogue. Two out of three showed that there was 2 characters who might've had a connection of some sort (relationship wise). The tone set is quite a happy/joyful one. It doesn't straight away start with emotional scenes that make the audience upset etc. This is because a relationship needs to be made with the characters and the audience for it to have an effect.

Titles:

Because 'Legally Blonde' has a chick flick sort of genre as well as romance, the title credits are in pink which is stereotypically a girly colour. The font is also girly as when the letter 'i' is written, it is dotted with a heart - which again is stereotypically a girly thing to do. The other title credits are a more simple colour and style. The fonts are nothing great however they are quite clear. The order of which the title credits follow is having the distribution and production company first. Then important/well known actors/actresses which is followed by normal actors/actresses. The rest of the crew (music supervisors, costume designer, hair and make up etc.) is then given credit followed lastly by the most important, the director.

Sound:

There is only soundscape for 'Legally Blonde' as the other two movies are unusually executed. The atmosphere of this movie is a college campus. This means you're most likely to hear chatter, giggling etc. Apart from dialogue the rest of sound from all the films are non-diegetic as they're music. This music sets the mood to be quite happy and joyful.

Target Audience:

The target audiences from my research is females from the ages 18-25 as they're most likely to watch a romance film.

Conclusion:

The similarities of the 3 film openings are that they all set the same mood - happiness. This is done through the simple visuals, colour scheme or music/sound. The cliché of having a man and woman involved from the beginning usually symbolises that there is a relationship between the two. This helps us establish the genre. The pink theme in 'Legally Blonde' helps up to understand it is a chick flick. The inspiration for my film is the typical romance film, a man and woman who are in love. However, 500 Days of Summer is one of my favourite films so I may take some aspects from their opening. I think the conventions we will use are colours (red, pink, white etc.), joyful yet romantic music and incorporating a man and woman into the title credits. This will help the audience to understand clearly what kind of film it is etc.

RESEARCH- Conventions of a film opening (romance)

Micro Conventions:
Camera Work:
There is a lot of close up shots in romance movies because it feels more intimate and the audience can feel the romance e.g. two people kissing.  There is usually a two shot to show the two characters that are in a relationship.

elizabeth olsen animated GIF

      Editing:
There could be love hearts and flowers added to show to the audience the genres theme/mood is set. There could also be a lot of red, pink and white colours to represent love. You wont find many romantic films that has very dark scenery as that would indicate it
is a romance/thriller type of film or romance/horror films and not just completely romance.

Mise-en-scene:
The lighting and background is most likely to be bright and colourful to represent happiness. The film would usually be set in a city to show some sort of success or wealth. This can be represented by their looks and clothing which would be attractive and posh. There could be many other settings however such as restaurants (on a date), wedding etc. This is supported by props such as flowers, chocolates and engagement rings.

Sounds:
The music and sound of a romantic film is usually slow, gentle and happy but in some cases you can still have loud and vibrant music if it is a romcom. By the sound people will understand what genre this film is and get into the flow of the film quickly.

Macro Conventions:
Key Plot:
There is usually a boy and a girl who meet or they could already be in a relationship. It might show how they got together and the journey that they have spent together. It may also show the struggle that they had to add more emotion and make it more interesting for the audiences.

Title conventions:
The titles are usually played with moving images.  The font and size of the writing will be clear and bold and it will be pink, red or white to indicate love.  It will have the distribution and production company followed by the casts names.  It would then go onto announcing the film title, other cast members and other crew who work behind the scenes such as costume designers and music.

RESEARCH- Why is sound so important in a film?

The main focus of sound is to enhance the visual image effect and create tone to the audience.
Horror and thriller movies for example, highly depend on sound to enhance the suspense and tension established in the scenes.

Whilst sound initially appears to be simple- music, sound effects or silence- there are a number of different sound terms to help us analyse and understand sound and how it is used or create.

Wild Track: An audio recording - intended to be synchronised with the film or video but recorded separately.

Ambient Sound: Background noise present in the scene.

Score: The score forms part of the films soundtrack, which usually includes dialogue, sound effects.

Song: A short poem or a set of words set to music or meant to be sung.

Voice-over: A piece of narration in the film or broadcast, not accompanied by an image of the speaker.

Dialogue: A conversation between two or more people.

Dubbing: When a foreign language is dubbed, the translations of the original is carefully attached to the lip movement of the characters in the film. - In the post-production.

Foley: The production of everyday sounds that are added to the film, video and other media content in post-production.

Synchronous: Sound which is matched to certain movement occurring in the scene.

Asynchronous: Matches the action which is performed however, is not precisely synchronised with the action.

Sound Bridge: A type of sound editing to create mood.

Sound Motif: A sound effect or combination of sound effects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation or an idea.

Sound scape: A piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds. - combination to create atmosphere.

Sound Design: Editing audio suitable for the film.

Diegetic: Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film,

Non-Diegetic: Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor implied to be present in the action.

Sound is used in film to establish tone, atmosphere and to give the audience hints reference the plot, characters or to identify the genre of the film. Sound is also used to contribute 'suspend disbelief' to create realism for the viewer and enhance their experience of the film.
Sound disbelief is knowing something in the film is fiction, but believe it to watch the movie. George Lukas, director of star wars said that about 50% of the film is made up of sound. This shows the importance of sound and how it can have an effect on its audiences.
