RESEARCH - Summary of conventions (romance)

Summary of conventions (romance)

Micro conventions:

Camera:

The camerawork would have a lot of close ups to create a romantic surprise/suspense such as close up of kissing, reactions etc. There could be a two shot to show the personalities of the two characters in a relationship. There might be a mid shot if there is dialogue.

Editing:

There could be love hearts added to show to the audience the genres theme/mood is set. There could also be a lot of red, pink and white colours to represent love. It is very unlikely to find black colours to represent a romantic movie as dark usually shows something horrible.

Mise-en-scene:

The lighting is most likely to be bright to represent happiness. It would usually be located in a city to show some sort of success or wealth. This is represented by their looks and clothing which would be attractive. There could be many other settings however such as restaurants (on a date), wedding etc. This is supported by props such as flowers, chocolates and engagement rings.

Sounds:

A happy song would play in the background to get the audience to create a theme/tone for the beginning of the movie. There could also be a slow romantic song playing depending on what approach the film is going on.

Macro conventions:

Key plot:

The plot could be the man and woman meeting or making some sort of eye contact. They could already be in a relationship and that there is a special day such as an anniversary.

Title conventions:

It is often simply integrated into the moving image. The size will be clear and the colour would be pink or red to symbolise love. It will have the producer/distribution company first followed by acclaimed actors/actresses. Then it would have the films title, other actors/actresses and other important crew members such as: producers, music, costume designer etc.
